From the original series to Discovery and beyond, the franchise has made huge strides in representing diverse characters. It’s a testament to how far we’ve come as a society that these characters are now being embraced and celebrated. From Sulu’s husband in Beyond to Paul Stamets’ relationship with Hugh Culber on Discovery, these characters are showing us that love is love no matter what form it takes. Jadzia Dax: Jadzia Dax was introduced in 1993’s Deep Space Nine series as an alien species known as Trill that can switch genders throughout their lifetime, making her one of the first genderfluid characters in television history.
Keyla Detmer: Keyla Detmer was introduced in 2018’s Short Treks episode “Calypso” as an openly bisexual Starfleet officer who has relationships with both men and women throughout her time aboard the USS Discovery-A ship she eventually captains after being promoted to Commander rank by Captain Pike himself!
